Hillary Rodham Clinton is presently democratic member of the United States Senate from New York and the wife of former United States President Bill Clinton. No First Lady before her has ever been elected to the U.S. Senate. During her time as the First Lady she became a very powerful symbol of the changing role for women in American society. She received both praise and harsh criticism for her active involvement in matters of public policy.
Hillary Rodham was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 26, 1947. She is the daughter of Dorothy Rodham and the late Hugh Rodham. She grew up with her two younger brothers, Hugh and Tony, in a Chicago suburb called Park Ridge.
She attended a public school in Park Ridge before becoming an undergraduate student at Wellesley College for women in Wellesley, Massachusetts. At Wellesley she served as President of the College Republicans, before changing her mind and becoming a dedicated Democrat. She earned a BA in Political Science a graduated with honors in 1969.
Two years after graduating she married Bill Clinton and moved to Arkansas where Bill was by then pursuing a political career. In 1978 Hillary became the First Lady of Arkansas when her husband was elected Governor. During her time in Arkansas she worked at the University Law School and at the Rose Law Firm. In 1980 she gave birth to a daughter, Chelsea. When Bill Clinton was elected to the White House, he asked Hillary to chair the Task Force on National Health Care Reform.
